Australia and New Zealand.
The International Cricket Conference organized the first
World Cup in England in 1975. The competition is sponsored by Prudential, an
insurance company that invests them £ 100,000. In exchange, the official name
of the competition is then Prudential World Cup.
Eight teams are involved: England, Australia, India, West
Indies, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and a combined team of East Africa,
which accounts Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. Semi-finals and a final succession
to the group stage, where the teams are divided into two groups of four.
Each team has a handle sixty series of throws to score. At
Lord's, the captain of the West Indies, Clive Lloyd, received the trophy from
Prince Philip, after completing a century which helped his team win the match
against the Australians.
In 1977, the Australian tycoon Kerry Packer media, in
conflict with the Australian federation, founded an unofficial cricket league,
the World Series Cricket (WSC) and recruited some of the best players in the
world, who are often excluded from their selection. WSC end in 1979 when an
agreement was signed between Packer and the Australian federation, shortly
before the second World Cup, which was again in England.
Despite the agreement, Australia deprives former members of
the WSC. For the first time, a qualifying tournament is organized before this
edition: the Trophy for ICC. It allows two national teams to join the six
member nations of law in the ICC. As four years earlier, the West Indies won
the final, this time against the English hosts, beaten by 92 runs, thanks to
Viv Richards, who accumulates 138 runs.
